Controversial Scholar Cleared to Teach
The University of Wisconsin at Madison — under political pressure to fire an instructor who argues that the United States plotted the 9/11 attacks — has cleared the way for him to teach this fall….
“There is no question that Mr. Barrett holds personal opinions that many people find unconventional,” Farrell said. “These views are expected to take a small, but significant, role in the class. To the extent that his views are discussed, Mr. Barrett has assured me that students will be free — and encouraged — to challenge his viewpoint.”
Personally, I don’t see this opinion as unconventional. Just one of many. And I can’t imagine the United States being up to the job. That would be one creative political hack for a government that can’t do much of anything without major snafus and problems. There are other issues as to how complicit individuals and institutions in the United States are complicit, directly and indirectly in what happened, but there’s support for that. Who provided financial support to the taliban and saddam in the past? Who had clearly documented social relationships with families involved? That isn’t being denied by anyone, and suggests greater source for worry. That said, the course being taught sounds interesting.
