No, this is not something from some conservative think-tank, but is noted in a course outline (below) as a description of what interested children in the 17th C. Something timeless going on here perhaps?

And as to how we got here, Yuka sent me to Department of Library Science and Instructional Technology
Southern Connecticut State University and particularly Mary E. Brown’s course, A Brief History of Children’s Literature, as we were talking about the new hire in English at Ryerson, Andrew O’Malley, who will be teaching Children’s Literature, among other things. Since many of our ECE students take the course, I’m very interested in the shape it will take. One quote that
