Worldmapper: The world as you’ve never seen it before on his blog. It is particularly interesting for ECE students and educators for how it shows data on children and families.

Slashdot | The Great Firewall of Canada references The Great Firewall of Canada blogpost on cybertip.ca’s “Project Cleanfeed Canada”, and also reference’s our friend Nart Villeneuve of the CitizenLab sums up my fear of government sponsored filters.

So, Bell Aliant, Bell Canada, MTS Allstream, Rogers, SaskTel, Shaw, TELUS, and Videotron have all opted in to a blacklist to block web sites that exploit children. Very tough topic. I support anything that keeps children safe, IF it keeps them safe. Blacklists don’t necessaryily do that. They do block content that it not objectionable. They are often not transparent, and they often cause lots of irresponsible problems for people caught up in the blacklist when it isn’t their fault. That said I would like to know that I can surf the internet and not have to worry about what I might trip over. That’s personal. Professionally, I’d not like black box sensorship. We’ll have to see if there is a respectable mechanism to allow for block sites to be challenged. I’ve seen some discussion on this, but I’ve not had time to check it out.
