Ex-Lemmingworks. ##.
Welcome to the Lemmingworks » Cinema is a new page I’ve set up on my blog.
I’ve been thinking about putting together a film series on the topic of children around the world, and present this at Ryerson for ECE students, and others who might be interested. SO I’m making up a list of films here, with annotations and links as I find them. Thoughts and comments appreciated.

Date: 2006-10-13 12:16 am (UTC)I found this entry in your journal via a Google search on "Natsu no Niwa," which I've been trying desperately to track down and purchase in subtitled DVD format.
Background: I'm a public librarian who runs an anime/manga discussion group for pre-teens and teens. I've been wanting to branch out into Japanese live-action films that are suitable for kids.
Do you, by any chance, have access to a copy of Natsu no Niwa somewhere in the depths of Ryerson (University?) or elsewhere? If so, do you know where it was acquired?
Now that I've flailed at you with my anxious query, I wanted to proffer some belated film suggestions of my own:
My Beautiful Girl Mari (Mari iyagi) (Korea, 2002) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0302758/
::points to icon::
Beautiful, wistful, fantastical child-perspective.
Au revoir, les enfants (France, 1987)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092593/
The memory of this story of WWII-era France still packs a punch for me, though I haven't seen it since the eighties.
When Beckham met Owen (Dong Pek Ham yu sheung O Wan) (Hong Kong, 2004)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0461938/
Coming-of-age/coming-out story focused on soccer-mad best friends David and Michael, and a girl in their class, Winnie.
Billy Elliot
http://imdb.com/title/tt0249462/
During the 1984 miners' strike in Northern England, young Billy finds himself irresistibly drawn to the ballet classes held in the same gym as his boxing lessons.
The Devil's Backbone (El espinazo del diablo) (Spain, 2001)
http://imdb.com/title/tt0256009/
Grim but striking ghost story set at the end of the Spanish Civil War with young boys as some of the central characters.
Whale Rider (New Zealand, 2002)
http://imdb.com/title/tt0298228
Young Maori girl Pai has the guts and the knowledge to become the next chief of her village--but will her stern grandfather accept her?
Holes (USA, 2003)
http://imdb.com/title/tt0311289/
Based on a Newbery-winning children's novel; Born of unlucky stock and sentenced to hard labor in the desert, Stanley Yelnats comes across strands of his family's past and transforms his destiny.
Stand by Me (USA, 1986)
http://imdb.com/title/tt0092005/
(Most likely needs no introduction)
The Secret of Roan Inish (Ireland, 1994)
http://imdb.com/title/tt0111112/
Dispatched to live with her parents in Donegal, ten-year-old Fiona uncovers family mysteries that are nothing short of myth.
Not One Less (Yi ge dou bu neng shao) (China, 1999)
http://imdb.com/title/tt0209189/
13-year-old Minzhi, roped in as substitute teacher for the school in her village, is determined not to lose one of her ragged group of barely-younger-than-her students and pursues the class troublemaker to the city.
Several anime series/feature films might also fit the bill: Hikaru no Go, Whistle!, Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro.
Just a few ideas.... There's so much good stuff out there!

Date: 2006-10-13 12:26 pm (UTC)I'll ask my partner, who is a children's librarian with the Osborne Collection about "Natsu no Niwa". I know she wants a copy, but has been to lazy to search the japanese language sites to see if it is available. I saw "Natsu no Niwa" in the theatre in Japan when we were dating, thought it was all in Japanese, and I understood few of the words.
Have you seen Kikujio? (http://tinyurl.com/ylshm7) I'm not sure who's perspective it is, because in the end the child is the merely the child, the rest are the children.
