New Wheelchair Taxis Hailed As Big Advance talks about new cabs just cruising around Toronto. It is a start, and better than wheeltrans, I think.

Those are great. I hope they get more than 4, and pray that ONE DAY maybe NYC will follow suit.

Ya, I thought you'd like that. Most cab companies do have special cabs already, but you have to make special arrangements, and there might be a special charge, I don't know. This is cool that they're now just a normal part of the system. I get a sense that cab companies are realizing that with the aging population this will really be a boost to their business if they can take people regardless of how they get around. Even being able to handle folks who use a walker was a problem, to just bend to get in and out of a cab. It is good news for everyone.

I like the wheelchair taxis, and ride in them quite frequently (relatively, anyways), but they're extremely expensive. Its flat-rate, true, but to get from Finch Station to my place or York to my place (normally $15-25 for a non-chair cab) costs just as much as it does to go from Mississauga...around $50. Craziness.

Well, that's what's good about the new ones. Same rate as normal. I rarely take a taxi myself. I just can't justify the cost of cars or taxis, or the cost of living in the burbs. THough I'm v. sympathetic with those who have no choice in the matter.

Ohhh, nice! See, that I didn't know.

Wouldn't it be nice if private cars were banned and recycled into a massive, wholly inclusive network of accessible electric light-rail?

What would you think would happen if a group of concerned citizens forcibly acted on this concern, at least just speculatively? I'm sure the philosophical implications alone (there are at least two or three big ones) could make for pleasant conversation and distraction.
