The mission of One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) is to empower the children of developing countries to learn by providing one connected laptop to every school-age child. In order to accomplish our goal, we need people who believe in what we’re doing and want to help make education for the world’s children a priority, not a privilege. Between November 12 and November 26, OLPC is offering a Give One Get One program in the United States and Canada. During this time, you can donate the revolutionary XO laptop to a child in a developing nation, and also receive one for the child in your life in recognition of your contribution.

I’ve ordered 4 of them (2 to keep) so that I can learn about them. I’ve not decided if this project is actually a good thing, but I do applaud the fact that they’re trying something, and I think I can only learn more by getting one and seeing what I can do with them.

I think it's a good thing. Once you get on the net, the possibilities are endless:)

Ditto... I just ordered 2 today (4 altogether), one for me and one for a friend... am looking forward to testing it out. I'm looking to start up some kind of list to find other users in Waterloo, it'd be neat to get everyone together to test out the mesh network.

Did you order them online or over the phone? I got my paypal receipt, but am still waiting for a confirmation email from them...

paypal. it has an receipt right in the email with a confirmation number. That's enough for me.

Confirmation number = transaction ID? I wasn't sure because I only got the email from Paypal, but when I phoned in, they were looking for a confirmation number, which I don't think I have yet.

Do you know any others in the Toronto area who have picked up some OLPCs?

Hey. I don't know anything. :) If you find out, please let me know?

I assume there will be users groups popping up very soon.
