Jen just sent me to Dipity. “Dipity is the easiest way to make and share interactive timelines about the people and things you care about.” And it looks like an amazing tool for creating public timelines on topics in a collaborative manner. I’m trying to imagine how I’ll use it in my classes, but if I was teaching a history of ideas course, this would be great.

I was thinking about putting my yaoi timeline on it, but I find Dipity's copyright rules a little confusing. On the one hand, Dipity claims copyright to the collective work and "The collective work includes works that are the property of the information providers which are also protected by copyright and other intellectual property laws. Any redistribution retransmission or publication of any copyrighted material is strictly prohibited without the express written consent of the copyright owner." On the other hand, "Your Content. Dipity claims no intellectual property rights over the material you provide to the Site. Your Content remains yours. You can remove Content you submitted at any time." So where, exactly, does that leave me? Can I or can I not reprint my own timeline on Dipity without Dipity's permission?

Well, the solution is to put your timeline on the net somewhere first, and then reproduce it there. You have the legal right to do it, since you own the original, and you have granted them some rights by putting it there, but it would be too messy to care if they tried to assert any copyright authority over you :)

The problem is that anyone can edit or add to your time line, so the question of who owns what is a mess.

Ithink.

Looks cool indeed, but I share some confusion, too, with Jen.

It seems that it is confused, more than you are confused by it.
