COUNTERBLAST

[My friend Megan's doing this...]

McLuhan International Festival of the Future
Counterblast Event
Wednesday, September 28, 2005
5-7 pm Banting Institute, 100 College Street, Room 131
Technologies of Truth: Capturing Irony and Fighting Cynicism
Megan Boler and Mark Lipton
In what ways has post 9/11 media culture bred new forms of cynicism and
skepticism about current political spectacle and the role of the press?
How do new multimedia express dissent through such forms as quicktime
movies, flash animations, and blogs? Are these merely "armchair activism"
or do these new forms of communication create alternative counter-public
spaces which in turn influence mainstream perceptions? Boler and Lipton
consider the increasing use of humor and satire in public discourse and
will screen various examples of this current media trend so as to provoke
discussion about digital dissent and political culture.

That sounds simultaneously stimulating and socially relevant.

Well, ya. it is! Didn't know you went for that sort of thing.
Talked to RoM recently? Haven't seen her on line.

Didn't know I went for that sort of thing? I'm all about that sort of thing! (To almost annoying extremes, even!) I actually heard about the McLuhan fest a little while ago, but was upset to find out that I probably couldn't make the events.

Wait, RoM? Assuming that you're not talking about the museum downtown, I'm sure its someone I know quite well, but I'm not sure who... (and I'm quite sure I'll feel foolish once you tell me)

Oh, and that wasn't supposed to be anonymous.

RoM is a live journal user you and I read who hasn't updated her LJ in a month. Just being oblique.

Ah, you should go. I'm a mcluhan fellow, sort of. I did resign when I got my new job, but they've still got me listed.

I would love to. It all depends if I'm able to run about the city by then!

And yes, 'RoM.' Its been quite some time since I've used that pseudonym, so the oblique nature of your question puzzled me at first. I find that the real name has a far more manageable number of syllables. We talk quite often, but I think that she has internet issues.

Exactly. If that's what works for her, then I'm happy. Not wanting to get involved.

I am particularly interested in the way media has changed and is changing the face of art, science, politics and philosophy. Personally I have a love-hate relationship with media for the obvious reasons that it has improved the quality of our lives, but at the same time it has and is currently being blamed for things like gun violence, image control, and the list goes on.

Very much so. I wanted to get into media, but realized the inherent evil. But that was back in 1981 or so. Much is worse now.
