I ran across this article”Is tech injuring children?” on c|net today. RSI is always an issue when dealing with technology, and especially when you’re dealing with growing individuals. Personally, I think that this has nothing to do with technology at all. I think it has everything to do with curriculum and pedagogy… that is, the choices we make about what we do and learn in our lives. Technology is just the location. I can imagine that a healthy body that is doing many things and is also using computers isn’t going to run into problems. But a body crammed in front of a computer to the exclusion of other things…

Blogging is ok. But blog about the cycling ride you took to go rock climbing, don’t blog about the 14 hours you played video games. Or blog about calligraphy, guitar playing, yoga, organic gardening. Tech is not injuring children… we are.

I think you are right. I wonder why people haven't realized that they have allowed their children to spend hour and hours wasting time on video games and then blame obesity on tech really isn't the issue. It isn't tech's fault it is adults fault. If computers were being utilized for educatgional purposes and not games there wouldn't be a problem. Of course that would mean that peole wound actually have to plan to interact with the kids and parents are always too busy.

Denial. There is always an issue that schools and tech widgets are baby-sitters as far as some people are concerned. But that's the world we've created for ourselves.

I believe that tech can be used to effectively problem solve. Sports and teching for example should be done in moderation. I don't see how tech can injure children. If Adults don't moniter children's activities then what do we have? PROBLEM. Therefore, adults who allow children to spend unsupervised hr computing are the culprits for their injuries. Great article Jason! (I may edit my response, I am half asleep).

Ya, I agree... even though the sleepiness. It is about the social choices we make as critically aware parents and educators.

I agree with you Jason, my children are 19 yrs and 17 ys old. They have never owned a PlayStation, Nintendo or Xbox. We believe that time spend together was and still is important to us as a family. We have always had a computer or two at home but there should be restrictions by the parents. This year we gave my son a cell-phone to communicate with us when he is traveling back and forth to Guelph University. Parents are children's own worse enemies.
