I’ve been thinking about putting together a film series on the topic of children around the world, and present this at Ryerson for ECE students, and others who might be interested. SO I’m making up a list of films here, with annotations and links as I find them. Thoughts and comments appreciated.

It's actually based on a real life 12 year old Afghan's story.
Now I am trying to remember the title of this wonderful fictional movie with great cinematography which I think was Italian. Dang. I had all this in Flailing in the Surf. Damned Hackers.
Oh and did you get that one where the boy dreamed of running the movie theatre in his town? That one is Italian. From the 1980s Dang... I'll get back to you. I suck at titles.
Another recent movie is The Cider House Rules (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0124315/), but honestly the book was much much much better than the movie. Still though, it won all sorts of aclaim, so I thought I'd mention it.

I'm not sure whether the 2 main characters' childhood memories sections the film would fit into your "ECE" theme, but Almodovar is one of my favourite directors and I had to squeeze him in. Plus, this is about very topical issue in the Catholic parts of the world -- sexual abuse of children (esp boys) by priests.
I'm trying to think of a good Chinese film on this theme because I feel certain that i've seen one, but can't bring it to mind atm. Stay tuned.

I found this entry in your journal via a Google search on "Natsu no Niwa," which I've been trying desperately to track down and purchase in subtitled DVD format.
Background: I'm a public librarian who runs an anime/manga discussion group for pre-teens and teens. I've been wanting to branch out into Japanese live-action films that are suitable for kids.
Do you, by any chance, have access to a copy of Natsu no Niwa somewhere in the depths of Ryerson (University?) or elsewhere? If so, do you know where it was acquired?

I'll ask my partner, who is a children's librarian with the Osborne Collection about "Natsu no Niwa". I know she wants a copy, but has been to lazy to search the japanese language sites to see if it is available. I saw "Natsu no Niwa" in the theatre in Japan when we were dating, thought it was all in Japanese, and I understood few of the words.
