Ex-Lemmingworks. ##.

This is a great video, via Jeremy. I like what it says about indoctrination. As one commenter put it, something like, what’s worse, the hegemony of the parents or religion. How do children get to form unbiased viewpoints? Of course, I don’t think anyone has unbiased viewpoints. The language and culture we grow up in doesn’t allow it.

it's from someone's POV and they are inherently biased. I think that when children grow up to become adults, through education and good parenting skills, they are able to look back on their religion, etc. and form their own opinions. Some people stay in their religions and some people leave. It's just important if someone can feel comfortable with the choices that they make.

hmmm... there's a taint of objective choice detectable behind there. I thought we moved from a newtonian world to heisenbergs already. How can we feel comfortable with the choiced we make when we don't even know if we made the choices. Even when they come from our own hearts, mouths and souls, can we reall know they came from us? :)

Newton's laws can still explain many things:)

PS--Even if there is no true choices to be made, it's good to feel comfortable when you have to make a decision between two things and end up believing that you picked the right one. Heck, it may not be the right one. But then, if I'm happy and things work out, I don't wanna know anymore.

LOL, since I stood up in grade 4 (I think I was twice this little girl's age) and asked my teacher what I should write the assignment "What Christmas/Hannukah means to me" when I'm an atheist, I don't really think I can comment other than to say I must show this video to my Dad.

You are right. There is no such thing as an unbiased viewpoint. It's not just the language and the culture that "we" grow up in, it's language and culture period end of sentence. The process of acquiring your identity markers -- your socialisation -- is basically a process of instilling bias in you. How else can religious leaders get people to believe in deities?

thx tho. so cute.

Agreed. Insofar as I get to say again that athiests are no different than religites except their god is elsewhere. Getting people to not believe isn't much different than getting people to believe, without the presents and the party in the winner's circle.

I got some cool new wine btw.

Since I commented I realised 3 things: a) I was actually in grade 5 and not 4; b) that little girl is supposed to be 8 years old (if you go to You Tube site it says so) which means i was only 1 year older than she; c) To come out with the stuff she's saying, she would have been seriously coached/given a script. My parents did not coach me to say that in class. When I reported it at dinner that night under the ongoing "what did you do in school today?" theme, my parents were pretty shocked. A year later I was sent to (you know where) school and then I was coached NOT to go around telling people what my religion was(n't).

Ok, now I'm done.

What kind of wine?
