The TTC has turned down Rafael Reyes, 23, for a Wheel-Trans pass. That is surprising, to say the least. Rafael Reyes, as you can clearly see in the photograph, has NO ARMS AND NO LEGS.
I know the Sun is a little more sensationalist than other papers, but is this for real? Wow. The woes of bureaucracy...
I find it heartening that our friend Rafael here has such a positive attitude about these things, taking things that would crush most people into dust like a friendly challenge--with a grin.
I want to buy this guy a drink. He can play in my band anyday.
I am not surprised that a situation like this is occuring. For some reason, when it comes to those who are less fortunate in our city, backs are turned towards them. It is not surprising that the city would actually consider denying Rafael a Wheel-Trans pass. It is not the first time our city has done something like this. This article is just another reminder of how our city runs!
AARGH! It makes me so mad when I read stuff like this. It is another example of not seeing the forest for the tree's. I hope more papers pick this up and T.V stations, sadly sometimes a little bad publicity is all that is needed to fix a problem. Good Luck to Rafael.
I am so disgusted and pissed off after reading about Rafael, I can't even discribe how this boils my blood. It shows how absolutely ignorant people are, why in the hell does it take a form that some annonamus person created to determine wether or not Rafael is disabled enough. Any idiot with a quarter of a brain can see that he more than qualifies for a Wheel-Trans pass, much more that the average person with a disability, HE HAS NO ARMS, AND NO LEGS. The lady doing the application is a perfect example of a passive citizen of Toronto "just going through the motions". Common sense would have told her that he is a special case and that she should make sure that the word was spread and that he got the help he so obviously needs. But obviously common sense is not very common and its just easier for some people to be passive.
I certainly see how you feel. What bugs me is the lack of a mechanism for dealing with this... We have systems at the university to create an equitable situation for people with special needs. You'd think that the city would have something to. I'm sure that the publicity will help resolve this.
This article absolutlely disgusts me. I don't understand what their justification is for not allowing him to have a Wheel Trans pass. I'm sure we will here more about the story. I am sure that some Lawyer will pick this up and the TTC will settle it outside of court and Rafael will get his TTC pass and then some.
